Submission Guidelines
Laboratoriodesign welcomes original writing on visual culture, design history, urbanism, and the textures of contemporary life. We commission pieces ranging from 1,200 to 4,000 words, accompanied by high-resolution imagery where applicable. Pitches should include a working title, a 150-word abstract, and three writing samples.
Our editorial calendar operates quarterly, with themed issues exploring topics such as ritual, domesticity, and the politics of public space. We respond to all submissions within thirty days, though commissioned work may take longer during peak periods. Unsolicited completed manuscripts are accepted but reviewed last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept international contributors?
Yes. We publish writers from over forty countries and welcome perspectives that challenge dominant design narratives. English fluency is required for commissioned work.
What compensation do you offer?
Rates vary by piece length and complexity, ranging from $400 to $2,500. We pay within fifteen days of publication via international transfer.
Can I republish my work elsewhere?
We request first publication rights for ninety days. After that period, authors retain full control and may republish freely with attribution.
How do I pitch a visual essay?
Send a brief concept statement, ten sample images with captions, and a proposed narrative arc. Visual essays typically run 800 to 1,500 words.
